Chapter Twenty-Four

Devi

When we arrived at the restaurant, we were photographed going in. Dane’s security team had to actually form a giant-dude phalanx around us to keep the photographers and camera men from getting too close.

And I got a little taste of what it must’ve been like to be Katie Mayes, wife of Jesse Mayes, gorgeous rockstar. I’d been in those situations too, walking into some big event with the two of them, flanked by security. But even then, I was on the outside. No one was really looking at me.

Right now, they were all looking at me. Because of the man on my arm.

I couldn’t imagine that the front sidewalk of restaurants in West Vancouver were often the scene of paparazzi circuses, especially on a Wednesday night, and all the people pausing to casually gawk—both on the street and in the restaurant—confirmed it.

But everything had been pre-arranged for us by Dane’s team, and as soon as we were safely inside, we were shown upstairs and to the very back. The restaurant was upscale but comfortable, with elegant architecture, sweeping views across the water to Vancouver, and grinding, sexy, hip-hop music playing, and totally had a date-night-with-a-young-billionaire vibe.

And we had a private room. Security and even Dane’s handler remained outside of it.

There was a smoked glass wall and a door closing us off from the rest of the restaurant, and inside, a floor-to-ceiling wall of shelves housing hundreds of bottles of wine. And a generous table set for two at the far end, with a mass of candles.

Our server was awesome, gave great recommendations, and after getting us seated, pouring us one of the probably obscenely expensive bottles of wine, and serving our food, he left us completely alone. He gave Dane a beeper thing so he could be notified when he was needed.

“Damn,” I said, as soon as the two of us were alone. “Why don’t they give people one of those every time they sit down for a meal? I’d love to have a server on call, but only when I actually want them.”

“As you should.”

“You know how many times I’ve been caught with a mouth full of linguine, when a well-meaning server swings by and asks me how everything is tasting? It feels awkward giving a thumbs up with a mouth full of food at a high-end restaurant.”

“In a high-end restaurant, they should know better. Roll with me, baby. You’ll never have to give a thumbs up again.”

I dug into my amazing-looking seafood linguine, still uncomfortable with the idea of rolling with him anywhere. And unsure about how I felt when he called me baby.

“So,” he inquired casually, when a very empty silence had fallen between us, “is this the part where you tell me you’re not one of those women who’s going to be impressed by my money? No matter how much I spend on you?”

Hmm. More conversation. I actually hadn’t thought to prepare myself for this part.

Faking being his wife in public, fine.

Having hot, twisted hate sex in the privacy of “our” penthouse? Maybe.
